YMCA Youth Swim Team
Our goal is to inspire a life-long love of swimming, while emphasizing the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Our practices are set up by age group. We feel it is important for kids to be with their peers. Within the age groups we set up training groups based on their ability. We put great focus on technique with the belief that with good technique, speed will follow. For Ages 6 to 18 years
Our co-ed competitive swim team emphasizes teamwork, fun, character development and good sportsmanship. The structured, supervised swim team practices will focus on stroke technique, endurance and interval training. Swim practices are tailored to the level of the swimmers and are designed to help them meet their individual goals while still taking part in a team activity.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SWIM TEAM
Coaches will review new swimmer’s strokes to insure they are ready for swim team and for proper placement in the program.
New Novice, 6-8 – can swim one length of freestyle with side breathing, and backstroke in good form. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 4, Stroke Introduction.
Advanced Novice, 7-8 – same as new novice with the addition of proficiency in butterfly and breaststroke. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 5, Stroke Development. Coach must approve placement in this group.
9-10 – can swim 50 yards of freestyle with side breathing, and backstroke in good form. They should be able to swim at least 25 yards of breast and fly. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 5, Stroke Development or Stage 6, Stroke Mechanics.
11 & Up – are proficient in all 4 competitive strokes and can swim 100 yards of front crawl and backstroke, and 50 yards of breast and fly. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 6, Stroke Mechanics.

2024 SUMMER SEASON
Summer runs June 3 – July 31. Opportunity to swim in several dual/tri meets with other Y teams. Please contact Head Coach, Paula Kwalick if your swimmer needs to be evaluated or with questions. Requirements are listed above by age group. Age group for summer is determined by their age as of May 1, 2024.
2024-25 FALL/WINTER SEASON
SEASON runs October 2 – their last meet, (typically February). Championship season for qualifying swimmers is in March – Silver Champs, Districts and States. Practice schedule will be adjusted for March. Novice Championships, (8 & under), are in February.
NEW SWIMMER EVALUATIONS will be held on Wednesday, September 11 and Monday, September 23, at 6 pm.
INFORMATIONAL PARENT REGISTRATION MEETINGS are Monday, September 16, and Wednesday, September 25, 6-6:45 pm at the Community Activity Center, (building in upper lot). Registration is only available by attending a parent meeting.
SWIM SUIT TRY-ON AND SALE will be Monday, October 7, 4-7 pm on the pool deck. We will have a limited number of items for sale at the event. Team suits and other items are available through TYR and/or Swim Outlet team pages, accessible through our Team Unify site. Team suits, caps and training equipment are required. Swimmers should try on suits prior to ordering to ensure proper fit.
Swim Team Participants must be Sewickley YMCA members.

Competitive Stroke Class
For those that will be joining the Y youth swim team for SUMMER of 2024. Class will build endurance, provide stroke techniques and refinement for children and youth ages 9 – 18. Swimmers must have completed Stage 5/ Stroke Development or it’s equivalent.
M/W 5-6pm For ages 9 to 18.
6-6:30pm ages 6 to 8 must have completed Stage 4

Training group is determined by swimmer’s age as of May 1, 2024
9 & Up – practice 4:45-6:00 pm, M/W/F, $265. Must have completed Stage 5 lessons or be able to swim 50 yards, (2 lengths), of free and back in good form and know the basics of breaststroke and butterfly.
ages 6-8 – practice 5:15-6:00 pm, M/W/F, $165. Must have completed Stage 5 lessons or be able to swim 25 yards, (1 length), of free and back in good form.
Several opportunities for meets with other Y’s will be offered.
Meet Schedule will be given at the summer swim team parent informational meeting TBD.
Registration opens on April 1, 2024 for summer swim team.
